We love to sew and own a lot of sewing tools on our crafting table which includes having many scissors, materials of different types, rulers, bone folder and paintbrushes. All of these items tend to take up a lot of space on a work desk. Even if you own a pencil holder it might be too small and can make things a little bit crowded for other things.
In order to help us better for our desk arrangement needs, we came upon a DIY idea of making a Giant Spool Desk organizer. You can try it to sort your things on the desk as well. It is super easy to make and the things you might need for making it might already be in your house.
Materials needed to make a giant spool desk organizer are as follows.
- A large empty can
- Mod podge
- Thin cardboard
- Glue gun
Follow the down below instructions for making this giant spool desk organizer. To facilitate the DIY process for the spool desk organizer, we have laid the whole process in a step by step manner.
Trace your empty can on the cardboard piece and then trace an even larger circle outside of it. The diameter of the inner circle should be about 3 7/8 inches while the outer circle’s should be about 5 3/8 inches.
Repeat the earlier step and then cut out the cardboard circle a shown in figure below. Remove the center for one of them to make it appear as a donut shape.
Now trace one more even larger diameter circle on the cardboard whose diameter should be 6.5 inches. Mark it’s center point and then do cut from one of its edges to its center.
Roll the newly formed circle in a cone shape with the diameter of it is the same size as the previous two circles as shown in figure down below. Secure this cone shape with some tape.
Place the donut shape circle on this cone’s top and then trace another circle on the cone where this donut is sitting.
Cut the cone’s top from where you have traced with the pencil and then use some more tape to secure both of these circles in place.
Repast the steps from 3 to 6 to make the two identical-looking cones.
To form your spool for the spool desk organizer, use the hot glue gun for dabbing some of it on the bottom side of the can and then slide one on the side end. Then slide the other one on the other side as well. On the second side be sure to place it in a manner so its wide side is upward. Use the tape to have these pieces secured in place.
Rip some strips of newspaper in water and use them with Mod Podge for making a papier-mâché to apply on the spool. Focus more on covering the cardboard pieces on the can. Let his papier-mâché dry up.
Paint these areas of papier-mâché. Apply a few coats of paint to cover the whole papier-mâché area and let it dry.
Glue don one end of a rope on top of your spool desk organizer and then wrap the rest around this whole can. Keep the right tight to avoid any gaps.
After reaching the end, use glue to secure the rope in place and viola your Spill Desk Organizer is ready.
