DIY planting pots with chalkboard

We come up with a really fun DIY project that involves plants and chalk. The name of our Diy project is planting pots with chalkboards. The idea behind this Diy project is to create the planting pots with each of them having their own little writing space. This will be a great educational way to let the kids know about what kind of plants are potted in the pots. One other great thing about our DIY project of planting pots with chalkboards is that you don’t have to stop with the planting pots. You can even make these cute looking chalkboards on little jars, storage boxes as well as crates. The project is a two-parter where you will also learn to make your very own chalkboard paint. So it is not only educational for your kids but for yourself too.

The following are the materials you will need to make the planting pots with chalkboards.

  • Terra cotta pots
  • Latex paint of the color you like: 1 cup
  • Unsanded tile grout for paint: 2 tbsp
  • Sponge brush
  • Tape
  • Paper
  • X-Acto knife
  • Chalk
  • A template for chalkboard on the plants; you can make this template of any shape you like

How-to:-

Step 1:-

Firstly download the template you like to have on your planting pots and then print it out. After cutting each shape fit it onto the plating pots. As per the size variation of the pots, you can decrease or increase the label’s size.

Step 2:-

With the X-Acto knife cut out the templates from the inside of the paper to create the stencil.  Tape this stencil on the pots along the outside edges.

Step 3:-

Take a bowl and mix 1 cup of the flat latex paint in the 2 tbsp of unsanded tile grout. Stir them both well until all the lumps are dissolved.

Step 4:-

Dip your sponge brush in this Diy chalkboard paint and start painting it inside the stencils on the planting pots. Carefully paint this chalkboard paint to fill in the stencils and let this paint dry for at least 15 minutes before applying another coat.

Step 5:-

After the 2nd coat has been thoroughly dried up, remove the tape to clear the stencil off and reveal the design of the chalkboard.

Step 6:-

Rub the entire chalkboard area with a piece of chalk and then wipe it clean with the damp cloth. Now your planting pots with chalkboards are ready to be written upon.
